Habits You Need To Break In Driving
Have you been driving for long or you're just a new driver? These tips would help you to drive better and ensure you get optimum performance from your car.
Driving can be both exciting and exhaustive as you know, depending on certain conditions e.g road conditions, condition of your car etc. The longer you own a car the more driving habits you develop for that car and not all are good. But the more experienced you become, the easier it is for you to change those habits and these are habits that affect your car. Below are examples of unwise behavior that could damage your car
1. Resting your hand on the gearstick. Firstly you need both hands on the steering wheel. Secondly, those little but constant pressure on the gear often cause the gear to shake thereby displacing the synchronisers and gears this in turn leads to problem in shifting.
Whether you drive a manual or automatic transmission, bad gear could cause problems both under the hood and on the road. Moreover, transmission comprises many parts which could lead to huge expenses and serious efforts to fix if they're not in order. So next time you want to rest your hand on the gearstick, remember the consequence and move it to the steering wheel.
2. Refuelling only when your tank is empty. Mechanical impurities accumulate in your tank and sediments formed at the bottom, the dirts get into the filter and pump thereby causing damage. it's best advise that you don't let your fuel go below half tank at any point to be on a safer side.
3. Frequent braking. Keep your distance and merge with the traffic. Incessant braking will cause serious wear and tear on the brake pad and disk thereby causing so much money in replacement.
It takes a kind of skill to master the art of braking correctly. To avoid accident, always check your brake hoses and brake fluid level. Moreover, appropriate braking will make the driving less stressful for the driver and the passenger
4. Ignoring suspicious sounds. As your car starts to make sounds that are unusual, prepare to take it to a competent mechanic instead of ignoring them. If you're driving when the noise starts, try to pullover to a safe place and get help. The sound could come from an area that if properly not looked into, could mean so much when it comes to fixing or replacing parts.
5. Neglecting the handbrake. When you park your car with automatic transmission on a slope the entire burden falls on the lock gear of the output shaft of the gear box. It doesn't matter whether you drive manual or automatic, car maker recommends the use of the hand (emergency) brake to immobilize any parked vehicle.
6. Running a cold engine at high rev. Most modern engines don't need warming up, however, it is worth remembering that until the gauge indicates operating temperature one shouldn't rev the engine at more than 2000 revs.
7. Keeping your foot on the brake while driving down the hill. Many motorists tend to keep their feet on the brake pedal while driving down the hill to help them come to a fast stop. However, this is not the ideal thing to do as the break pad gets heated up and and wearing out. The proper thing to do is reduce your speed by shifting to a lower gear which helps reduce the need to apply the brake often. It reduces the speed of the engine there by reducing the speed of the vehicle generally. The aim is to prevent the car from gaining too much speed.
