Chassis, Powertrain and Drivetrain

So many times you stumble on terminologies that come across like jargon to you simply because you do not find such terms in your regular dictionaries. Some of these terms are thrown at you in form of adverts or hypes when shopping or researching a new car. Sometimes you know these words, other times you don't. And I tell you what, most people don't bother to understand what they mean, they just get the car and move on, since to them having money to buy the car is all that matters.
Now let's talk about some of these words and today we're starting with Chassis, Powertrain and Drivetrain.

Chassis
Chassis basically is the frame on which the body of a car is built. Just like the skeleton in human body system, chassis provides internal support for other components of the car like the engine, transmission, axles and so on. It helps keep the car rigid, stiff and unbending.
The chassis is considered to be the most significant component of an automobile. It is the most crucial element that gives strength and stability to the vehicle under different conditions.
At the time of manufacturing, the body of a vehicle is flexibly molded according to the structure of chassis. Automobile chassis is usually made of light sheet metal or composite plastics. It provides strength needed for supporting vehicular components and payload placed upon it.

Powertrain
This simply refers to the engine of the car. The powertrain in a vehicle is composed of everything that makes the vehicle move. This includes everything from the engine to the transmission to all the parts that allow the power from the engine to get to the wheels.
If the chassis is the skeleton, the powertrain is the musculature system. The powertrain encompasses every component that converts the engine’s power into movement. This includes the engine, transmission, the driveshaft, differentials, axles; basically anything from the engine through to the rotating wheels.

Drivetrain
A vehicle’s drivetrain consists of all of the powertrain’s components except for the engine. The drivetrain, as the name suggests, is a group of components that drive the wheels – but unlike the powertrain, it typically refers to everything that comes after the engine (and some will argue it does not include the transmission, either). So all the bits in between the engine and wheels that produce, develop or assist drive are what make up the drivetrain.
Drivetrains for front, rear and all-wheel-drive and 4WD vehicles are all quite different (4WDs-and-AWDs), due to the need to send the engine’s power out to the wheels in different ways.

Maintenance
When maintaining a vehicle’s powertrain you consider all the several components involved. The easiest way to keep all components of your vehicle in great shape is by maintaining the proper levels of fluids and by changing the fluids at the manufacturer’s specified mileage. Changing fluids can often be something you do yourself, but if there are signs of other problems or you do not want to do the maintenance yourself, you can pay a mechanic or service technician to do it. The most important thing is that your vehicle’s powertrain is tended to on a regular basis.
