10 Things We Miss About Our Old Cars

1. Price- Rewind back to 1985 or thereabout, a brand new Audi 100CD would cost you just about N6,200 but same can't be said of the car today. The margin in the prices of new cars these days compared to those good old days is tremendous. The cheapest brand new car in Nigeria today will set you back by nothing less than N4m, no thanks to inflation.

2. Silence- Drive any modern car and you're sure notice one thing; it does not shut up. There is always a sound of either a warning or a notification ranging from seat belt to doors not locked properly to traffic ahead. Old cars didn't have sensors to do all that, therefore they were quiet and you could concentrate more on the driving and look out for hazards on the road.
3. Being a better driver- if you have driven a modern car with all the options available, you would notice how lazy you have became. using cruise control on the highway makes you rest your legs throughout the journey same way while switching lane, the blind-spot sensor warns you of another car without having to turn your neck. these are some of the things that make you lazy and inattentive while driving new cars
4. Not being blinded when other people turn on their lights- If you're around 25 years old, you would remember those old glory days when other cars headlights wouldn't drill through your eyes. That's because high intensity xenon lights haven't been implemented yet. Instead, all the cars have equivalent of candles as light.

5. The smell- Have you ever opened the door of an old car? The smell of the leather and the wood used in building it is one of the things that hit you. The older the car, the more matured the smell and trust me it is far more superior to the new car smell.
6. The wings- The wind wings are the hinged smaller windows on the front (or back in some cases) of an old car doors that direct cooling winds to your face while driving. They were phased out in the 80's with the introduction and popularity of air-condition systems.

7. Manual soft tops- Manual soft tops in old cars are great. They are light and can be pulled up and down very quickly. Unlike what we have today, where you have to wait for few moments before the automated process could be completed either while stationery or moving slowly. Another great thing about the manual soft top is the fact that a replacement motor might not be needed unlike the electric modern ones.
8. Chrome bumpers- Because of pedestrian safety and road regulations nowadays, chrome bumpers are rare these days that it is easy to forget that they ever existed. Those bumpers look awesome on cars especially when they flash their rays in the sun.

9. Durability- old cars like the 80's Mercedes were engineered and built to last and easy to work on. and these cars will easily do more than 250,000 miles with roper maintenance. that is evident in the few models we still have around today. new cars these days are regarded as white golds with a reliable lifespan of 10 to 15 years before they would be sent to scrap yard unlike the old cars that could be around for close to 30 years or more
10. The untouched note of the exhaust note- With a lot tuning going on these days, you are sure to have exhaust note that have been altered. A car's breadth need to be clean and natural like we have in those days. Exhaust need to sound authentic and it needs to rev freely. Too many cars these days sound overly macho to the point of annoyance.

There are several other things we miss about our old cars ranging from the pop-up headlights, to manual gearbox to the car keys that actually look like keys and not testicles. What else can you add?
